Kolbie Blume of the ThisWritingDesk.com is going to show us step-by-step how to paint beautiful landscapes with watercolour.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • How painting gorgeous landscapes isn’t as difficult as it may seem
  • How to break a scene down into easy-to-paint “puzzle pieces”
  • Kolbie’s secret landscape recipe!
  • AND SO MUCH MORE!

Key takeaways from this lesson:

  1. Imperfection is realistic!
  2. Divide a landscape into two parts: the background (usually the sky) and the foreground (usually everything else)
  3. Backgrounds are lighter, foregrounds are darker
  4. Practice the wet-on-wet technique, by first getting your paper wet with water
  5. Paint the background (the sky) using a left to right movement with your brush as you move down, to create a fading gradient
  6. Mountain shapes look more realistic if there have jagged edges throughout, and not just perfect triangle peaks

Tools used in this video:

  • Watercolour paints
  • Watercolour brushes of varying sizes
  • Watercolour paper

I have such performance anxiety about art and rally want to take another class but don’t. Thanks for this tutorial. Very encouraging.

  2. Valerie Richards says:

I loved Kolbie’s tutorial on landscape watercolour painting techniques. Her demonstration and explanations were very clear and concise. Now I can’t wait to try it myself! Thanks so much!

  3. Pam Gruchala says:

Thanks Kolbie! Very helpful to a self teaching watercolor artist. I’ll paint today with your insight. I too, was artistic as a young girl but fell away from it in fear of failure. Whenever I watched an artist paint I would think, “that’s so easy, I can do that”. Well, at 65 I am enjoying the discovery of painting. I consider myself in the practice stage, learning the feel of paints, brushes and color blending. I’m hard on myself, but share attempts with friends and learn from mistakes.

  4. Mai says:

Kolbe and Becca are the most awesome teachers! Seriously.
Simple, step-by-step directions to create beautiful art and lettering.
    You women rock!
