When you need a guideline but you’re too lazy… (secret weapon #1)

Enter, the laser level ?.

I use the Johnson Hot Shot, but it can literally be ANY laser from a hardware store, that shoots out a red line.

For an envelope, I usually just eyeball it, shoot the line across, and write the name.

But if I’m trying to be more precise… (secret weapon #2)

I just use a regular clipboard and line the edges with this ruler scotch tape to give me guidelines.

I line up my tape on both sides with the edge of the clip at the top. Then I clip in my envelope and line up my laser level to shoot across from the 3″ to the 3″. And now I have my perfectly straight line to write my word across!

Of course, you can use a larger size paper and move your laser level down the clipboard as needed for multiple lines. This saves me A TON of time because I don’t need to draw in any guidelines and then spend time erasing them.

Disclaimer: If you’re using the laser level for hours a day, please look into the safety of staring at a red laser light for that long. I’m not a scientist but it’s probably not the best idea to stare at a red laser level for hours at a time ??‍♀️.

If you have a stack of say 500 envelopes to do, I have a much easier way that I talk about in this video.

And that’s a wrap!

If you’d like to be entered in to win a FREE laser level, please be sure to like, subscribe and comment under the video! Remember, the contest closes June 22, 2020 at 11:59pm ET. Check back and I will announce the winner in the video’s caption in one week from the above date!

  8. Sydney Lacey says:

Wow! Great idea. Love the clipboard with the ruler tape as well. I recently did 42 hand lettered name tags for a party that my aunt was having (with vines and leaves as a border) and was just drawing a light pencil line for a baseline. Anyway, it inspired me to really work on my calligraphy and fine tune it rather than keep doing my own version. So I’m happy to have found you and looking forward to the basics course!

Becca, I love your very informative videos! I have a question about addressing envelopes….
If you are addressing an envelope with a name with descenders in BOTH first and last names, where do you write the address?? left? right? middle?
    Thank you!

Tell me what you thought!
