I love experimenting with different lettering tools and techniques.

This rainbow alphabet using coloured pencils is no exception.

I can’t wait to show you how to make your own!

What you need to know…

Gather up your supplies before you get started – you’ll need paper, coloured pencils, and a light gray marker for outlining.

You don’t need the exact supplies I used, but all of my specific supplies are linked above.

Let’s Get Started!

Step #1: Write out your alphabet.

.I freehanded my alphabet in calligraphy without pre-planning the layout. Feel free to use a pencil, take your time, etc. – whatever you need to feel comfortable.

Step #2: Select your palette of coloured pencils.

For a project like this one, you want several similar shades of the same colour to get the best gradient and blends.

Bonus tip: If you’re using textured paper, having sharp pencil tips will help!

Step #3: Start with your first colour, and work your way down.

I worked in rainbow order, so my very first colour was a deep red. Anything on that plane, I coloured deep red using the gray marker as my guide.

Step #4: Blend your colours, and work your way down.

My second colour was an orange-red shade. Overlapping with the deep red a bit, I filled in the next horizontal “plane”.

I repeated this with another more orange, orange-red before moving on to a fully orange coloured pencil.

Turn on some relaxing music and work your way through the alphabet!

Tip: Watch the full video if you want to see my work through allllll the coloured pencils I used!

That’s a Wrap!

I LOVE how this turned out. You could use this same process for a name, a quote – tons of things!
