Let’s Get Started!
Gather up your supplies before you get started. I got the house ornaments off of Amazon – I just typed in “acrylic house ornaments.”
Before getting started, make sure you’ve removed the protective liner from the acrylic!
Step #1: Paint the backside of the ornament brown.
I used the largest size brown POSCA paint pen I had available, but you can totally use paint and a brush if you prefer! I personally prefer the look from the POSCA paint pen – it’s less streaky and looks almost chalky. I think it looks really pretty!

Get your paint pen really, really saturated, and then paint the backside of the ornament. It’s okay if it looks streaky – we’re going to do a second coat, but also, it’s handmade. It’s meant to look handmade. Fill up the whole backside with a solid coat of paint, and let it dry.
Step #1.5: Add a second coat of brown paint.
For your second coat, make sure the pen is really saturated with paint to avoid any scrape off of the first coat. Then, carefully apply a second coat the same way you did the first. Light pressure, uniform application. Once your second coat is done, let it dry. Then it’s time to paint the front!

Step #2: Grab your white paint pen and get started on your gingerbread house design.
Note: Make sure the protective liner is removed from the front side of your ornament!

I used a white POSCA paint pen in size 3M. You can sketch out your design using a Stabilo All pencil if needed, but I just jumped right in. These gingerbread houses look whimsical and cute no matter what, so even if it’s messy and imperfect, it’s totally fine. If you need inspiration for gingerbread houses, Google some! There are a billion designs you can reference.
Start by drawing the roof edges and the chimney. Draw a line through the chimney and give a roofline on each side. Next, trace around the chimney and add brick details.

You can also add snow details on the roof. Starting in the middle, create a little drip of snow, then continue down with uneven edges to show snow on the rooftop. It doesn’t have to be perfect or fancy.

For the windows, add a round one in the middle and use dots as a guideline for the circle. Draw the windowpanes and move on to the door. Thickening the lines around windows and doors adds contrast, so double those lines if you prefer.

Next, add windows beside the door and customize them as you go. You can copy mine or add details inspired by the house of the person you’re making this for, like specific windows or other defining elements. It’s a great way to make it extra special.

With the main elements done, you can start adding little decorations. Half-circles and petals above windows, dots down the window sides, squiggly lines along the bottom, half-cicles above the door.

Step #3: Add the family name!
Using the tiniest POSCA paint pen you have (I used 1M), write the family name. Depending on the name length, you might need to adjust the space. If there’s no space for a name, you could add a house number or create a nameplate above the door.

That’s a Wrap!
There you have it – super simple and cute! You can customize it with different elements, add colors if you want, or keep it simple with the brown and white design. Even with a streaky background, it still looks great.

I hope you enjoyed that! Next up, here’s another holiday post I think you’ll like!
And finally, your dad joke…
What do you call an unidentified gingerbread man?
