It’s the holiday season, which means my inbox and DMs are full of well-meaning gift givers asking “What should I buy for my spouse/friend/sibling/parent who is interested in learning calligraphy?”
Look no further… I’ve got five must-haves for beginner calligraphers!
First Things First…
The links below may be affiliate links where appropriate. This means that your purchase through these links may result in a few cents in payment to me, to support creating further resources like this one! That being said, I will never suggest supplies that I do not personally use and fully recommend.

Let’s Get Started!
These are my top five most recommended items for those interested in learning calligraphy (and if you want a more thorough explanation for each item, watch the full, five-minute video)!
Item #1: Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pens
This is the crème de la crème of brush pens that you can get for someone who’s just getting started. It’s also the one that I use all the time, even 10 years into doing this.
It’s the best brush pen you can get – a simple small-tip black brush pen.

Item #2: Tombow Dual Brush Pens
Same company as above, Tombow, but these brush pens have a bigger tip.
They’re sold individually, in small sets, in huge sets as well as in a tooooon of different colours. So many options!

Item #3: Rhodia Paper
My number one recommendation if you’re buying paper to practice on is called Rhodia.
I also recommend the A4 size (number 18) in a grid style.
There are tons of sizes, different colours (black, white orange), and different types (blank, grid, dot), but my best recommendation is the A4 size (number 18) in a grid style.

Item #4: Marker Paper
My next recommendation is marker paper – it’s a translucent style of paper that’s also super smooth, so it’s great for your brush pens.
The best part about it is that you can use it to trace over calligraphy workbooks (instead of writing directly in the workbooks). This allows you to preserve your workbooks and get a ton of extra practice in!

Item #5: My Calligraphy Course!
My last recommendation is to buy my full calligraphy course (and it’s perfect for last minute shoppers since it’s immediately downloadable).
I have a complete bundle of courses and workbooks that take someone from the very beginning of calligraphy all the way to feeling comfortable and confident with their calligraphy in a series of small, bite-sized, well-ordered steps.
It’s a set of six downloadable workbooks, plus a ton of step-by-step videos, bonuses, and extra resources. It really is the best option for beginners – I’ve had over 150,000 people go through this course. It really is the course I wish I had had when I first got started. You can find out all about it here.

That’s a Wrap!
I hope that was helpful. Everything is linked above to make shopping even easier!
I really feel confident that if you buy any or all of these things for the person who wants to learn, they’re going to super appreciate your help. And also, thanks for supporting them in getting started with calligraphy, because I’m always down to have new people learning calligraphy and getting into this world. It’s the best!
And finally, your dad joke…
Whats the best gift to give someone?
A broken drum… No one can beat it.
