I understand why this is a misconception because there are so many different calligraphy tools out there.
And some of those can be really expensive if you’re really into calligraphy… If you want to get all those fancy pens and all those fancy holders and all that jazz, you can make it expensive for sure.
But that is not what I recommend. And that is not what we’re talking about in this post.

I’ve been doing calligraphy for over six years, and I still use the exact same two supplies. These are the exact two things I would recommend any beginner to use if they want to learn calligraphy.
You’ll keep using them too – even when you’re a pro!
Together these two things cost under $15 (depending where you live – this is an approximation for the US and Canada).
Pretty cheap! Stop letting the thought that supplies are too expensive stop you from trying calligraphy.
So… what are those two supplies anyway?
#1: Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pens
This is a flexible tip pen, and it comes in two versions: hard tip and soft tip. You might find it sold individually, or you might find it in a two pack that has both the hard tip and the soft tip.
These brush pens are totally great for beginners, so grab whichever one you can find. (The blue barrel one is hard tip; the black/green one is soft tip.)
One of these brush pens should cost about $5.
#2: Marker Paper
The second thing you need is a pad of marker paper. This is Canson XL, but any brand is fine.
Marker paper is a really smooth semi-transparent paper that’s good for brush pens. A pad of marker paper should cost about $10.
What’s so great about it is that you can use it to trace your worksheets when you’re first learning calligraphy! You can put it right over top of worksheets so that you can do the tracing that’s required when you’re first learning.
